That is because your concept of identity is wrong. As far as I know,
the identity is suppose to represent exactly what the word means,
which is, "condition  or  character  as  to  who  a  person  or  what
a  thing  is" (dictionary.com). While you can state that sure, you and
you're friend are different characters thus need different identities,
Kopete wasn't designed to allow for that kind of work flow. Instead it
was meant for _you_ to use.

The idea is that a person may have multiple online "identities". They
may have a work identity, a WoW identity, and a friend/family
identity. With each identity, a set of IM accounts are associated.
Furthermore, every single IM account associated with the identity
should try to match the Identity's information as best as possible
(icon, name, nickname, etc), unless explicitly overrided by the user.
That means that for most people, they probably only have one identity,
and thus there is an option to show protocols directly on the bottom
toolbar instead of identities.
