Wow. 0.4? Wow. I had no idea anyone was still running Kopete 0.4.1! 
Unfortunately, in the intervening time since it was released, the MSN 
protocol (and others) changed several times. Upgrading is really your only 
option.

If you can give us some idea of what goes wrong, we can try to help. You 
probably won't be able to get any further without upgrading both KDE and 
Kopete, though.
