Microsoft changed the MSN protocol in oct 2003. So old clients can't anymore 
connect to MSN.

You need at least Kopete 0.7.2 to connect
Anyway, this require kdelibs >= 3.1.0

I suggest you to try the latest verstion of KDE (and then kopete since Kopete 
is now include in KDE)
KDE becore nicer each releases.
