I doubt they can be translated at all without hacks. Is there a shell way to 
access gettext? Is there a shell way to figure out KDE's language settings 
and the location of the .po file to use?

Also, why would you need this? While having it translatable is a big plus I 
think a one-time script like this would certainly be excused in English. If 
you really want it translated (admittedly very nice), write a small KDE app 
that passes 'false' to the KApplication constructor (no GUI) and handle it 
there. I have a kconf_update app that does this, you can take a look at the 
code.
