It doesn't fix the problem. The conversion now doesn't error, but either the 
fromXML or the toXML is seirously broken, since even my known good version 10 
list that I had backed up gets seriously corrupted. Makes all these fake 
groups, renames everyone, deletes people, I have like 15 empty contacts. And 
everyone else is having the exact same behaviour in their contact lists.

This was caused in some fashion by your commit yesterday, and none of us knows 
enough about the process to fix it, and kopete is now unuseable, so makes 
finding/fixing any other bugs impossible. Seems to me these commits were 
awfully drastic to be done 2 days before a major code freeze.
