Hi,

it did get through, I just did not have time to reply yet.

I'll send you the file in private mail, as it has some 50 kB and I don't want 
to bother with it.

If you don't have KBabel installed on your system, you should install it. It 
comes in kdesdk package.

Open kopete.pot in KBabel, translate as many strings as you desire, save it as 
.po file and launch catalogue manager. You'll have to configure it to use 
correct paths.

Next, right click your kopete.po file and choose Commands -> Compile.

kopete.gmo is created.

Now copy this file to your $KDEDIR/share/locale/LOCALE/LC_MESSAGES/kopete.mo

LOCALE in the path means locale for your language. Probably fr. Also notice 
that the extension of the final file is .mo, not .gmo.

Restart kopete and you should see your translated strings.

You may want to look at 
man xgettext
man msgfmt
man msgmerge
too see what is really happening (KBabel does this for you).
