@FiNeX: I have the most recent KUbuntu packages, but still no search bar.

But when I start Konqueror from the command line, I get the following warning
printed on stderr:
    findServiceByDesktopPath: searchproviders/locate.desktop not found

Does this ring any bells about what might be causing the problem?
