Which view mode are you using? In the list view modes (Tree View, Detailed 
List View, Text View), both the method you suggest as well as incremental 
navigation work. In the Icon and Multicolumn View modes only incremental 
navigation works. That is, you can type the beginning of a file name to get 
to the first matching file.
