I guess a grammar checker that finds common mistakes would be more useful. 

diction can be found at http://www.gnu.org/software/diction/diction.html, 
but it's not useful for this, as it hardly really checks, it just makes 
suggestions (e.g. it suggests "it's/its" /every/ time it finds "its").

Building a complete grammar for a language like English is not feasible 
currently (at least not in a way so that one can actually use this 
grammar). However, it should be possible to have a list of constraints 
that finds many mistakes.
