I'll take your word for it, no time to read that stuff now...
Just thinking can't we have an extra Messages.sh in the karbon/plugins 
dir? And alter the find in the karbon top-level dir (if needed) to avoid 
it indexing the stuff that's going to be in the karbon-plugins.pot ?

I have a big problem with restructuring code location (i.e. make it worse 
from a technical point of view) just to work around limitations of a 
tool :)
