If you decide to implement some of those plot engine features, and in the 
interrest of code reuse you could perhaps take a look at Qwt. 
http://qwt.sourceforge.net/

It sounds like it's quite stable and have a long history of development and 
continious maintainance. The QwtPlot and QwtCurve classes look like they 
handle at least some of the needs a advanced plot engine has.
