Yes, that would be the far goal.

To me, it seems to need many changes in the code to do that. So if I am alone 
on that code, it will probably not be for KOffice 1.4. (That is why I would
first prefer the "no change" policy.)

Yes, but the use of these member functions of koUnit were removed from the 
unit widgets, as they brought problems and the unit widget did it anyway by 
themselves.
