While reading the Qt doc, I have found an interesting QDomDocument::setContent 
variant:

bool QDomDocument::setContent( QXmlInputSource *source, QXmlReader *reader, 
QString *errorMsg, int *errorLine, int *errorColumn  )

It permits to have access to the SAX parser, therefore also to set the SAX 
parser, for example to alway report white space, including things like:
<test>                               </test>
