The serial number of the day, means the day passed since the reference
day, that is 31 Dec, 1899 (it's not 1st Jan 1900, read
http://lists.kde.org/?l=koffice-devel&m=103181209008739&w=2).
So 1st of March, 1900 means "61".
I agree that changing the help description into something clearer is
better for the user. So, Lukáš (again and again) ?
