Please check wich font you have selected for the default. Your selected font 
appears to take a lot of time to load.

Since you have kde3, I'm assuming you use an KOffice 1.2beta, then you can 
select the font in the KWord config dialog.
Otherwise you should look at the KControl dialog and try to change the 
look&feel -> font -> General font.
