Hi, I'm sorry to take so long to reply.  I've been away for 
a few days and am only just now going through my older 
emails.

I'm happy to provide, as an English user who also wants 
Japanese, any advice or beta-testing you might 
require--however, I'm not a programmer.  I have written 
technical documents in the past and worked at a computer 
company, so I can probably explain things clearly enough 
for you to be able to implement them--even if you're not 
fluent in Japanese, but I would not be able to actually 
write code.  As far as figuring out how feasible this is or 
finding an appropriate programmer to assist you with the 
actual code-side of things, you might try speaking with the 
Kmail team--they have incorporated both Canna and Kinput2 
into Kmail, such that when one runs:

Kmail --canna &
Kinput2 &

from the terminal, Kmail will start up and then, whenever 
Japanese is needed, the "Shift-space" key-combo is pressed. 
The Kinput2 window is invoked, and whatever text is typed 
is processed by Kinput2, sent to the Cannaserver to be 
converted into 2byte Kanji characters, and returned again.  
Hitting "Enter" then drops the converted character into the 
Kmail document.  I made an icon with a little shell script 
behind it and that's worked quite nicely--anytime I want 
Kmail, the Japanese input is already running in the 
background.

Japanese is essentially a three piece system (kanji server, 
kana/romaji input, and the display), but it seems that the 
newer versions of KDE and RedHat have got relatively 
seamless support.  It used to be quite daunting to set up 
even the simplest stuff, but now it's quite easy.  A few 
font changes in the Konqueror settings got me up and 
running quite quickly.  I wouldn't be surprised if you find 
it's easier than you think to add these features into 
Kword.  Most of the translation work gets done by Canna and 
Kinput2, and Kword already displays Kanji quite nicely when 
I cut and paste it in--so the display part isn't an issue.  
Your problems are most likely due to the lack of the right 
font/character-set combo, either because they're not 
installed yet or because you just haven't selected them.

Again, my apologies for taking so long to write back.  I 
look forward to hearing from you.  Best wishes, and (of 
course) if this project seems a bit too daunting for the 
moment, I understand.  Nevertheless, there is quite a large 
Japanese linux community, and I'm sure they'd be as 
interested as I am in seeing it support Japanese.

Hmm, thats all well and fine but we need someone who 
actually uses this
stuff, I have never heard of these pieces of software, let 
alone used them
to write _japanese_!  What we really need is direct help on 
how to do this.

Basically I don't know where to start to get this working 
in the first place...
I am still fighting with X (and Qt) to get it to recognice 
my japanese fonts
in the first place :(

Any help is naturally appriciated as we can't implement 
what we have no 
knowledge about..

Well, just see this is a plea for help to anyone not using 
1-char glyps :)
