Reading me again, I think that I must be clearer.

A XML tool in default behaviour ( xml:space="default" ) can add (white) 
spaces only where (white) spaces already are or where they are allowed. It 
cannot just add spaces in the middle of normal text.

Nevertheless this can lead to change like for example from:

  <TEXT>This is a test</TEXT>

to

  <TEXT>
     This is              a  test
  </TEXT>

However KWord cannot cope with such a change, in particular if character 
formatting is involved.
