It is all possible - it's just that you might not see those options in 
the file dialog filter combobox. Just type '*' in there and select the .doc
or .xls files.

This is fixed by kdelibs-2.2-alpha-* ... (big improvements in the file dialog).
I think we'll have to make this a requirement before koffice-1.1-final.

RTF import isn't activated yet, use .doc to import msword files.
