OK, there is so much misinformation on the msword
filter, I feel I must set the record, and more
importantly, people's expectations, straight.
Here is the story with the msword filter. AFAIK, it was
capable of importing the text (along with some limited
formatting), lists and tables from word97 and word2000.
Word95 is not really supported, but the main hooks are
there if someone wants to invest some time in this.
Specifically, fast saves ARE fully supported.
Unfortunately, some of the valiant attempts to stablise
some of the worst kword drawing issues in literally the
days before 2.0 went out caused instability which often
made it look as though the msword filter was crashing.
This was hardly ever the case - it was kword itself.
After 2.0, I spent a long time trying to make
embedding of objects work. All the code on the msword
filter side is done, but kword itself was so unstable, that
I suspended work pending the rewrite.
Once the rewrite of kword is done, I fully intend to
resuscitate the msword filter. I know lots of people are
cheesed of with the state of affairs...all I can say is
please be patient. I don't have many choices at this
point.
If you want to be really helpful, you could try to:
- flesh out the WMF filter (see what ytou can use from
Martin Vermeer's excellent libwmf)
- reverse engineer enough of the WMF file format to
understand how msword uses "Client Anchors". If you
can do this.
These two would have a HUGE impact on our ability to
support graphics. I have put all the filter architecture in
place for this: once floating frames make it into kword,
I expect you will be amazed by what is there
(embedded spreadsheets, graphics, even the bare
bones of powerpoint presentations).
Thanks, Shaheed
