You forget something. You can update an image without using the KOffice
application. tar xvzf, update the image, tar cvzf. How convenient.

Do they ? Hmm... Well I'm inexperienced there I have to admit.
Support for pointing to child objects by filename has always been there
in koffice (in the core, not in the UI)... but disabled for the reason
I gave previously.

Yup. And the intermediately simple user would say "let's save space
by only 'linking' to the image" and then forget he did that and
give away the document with missing images.

I don't know... for me a document is one single entity. It's not a web page
pointing to images....
