The problem - as I see it - is twofold.

Firstly, let's face it: distros are a dime a
lookalike dozen these days. This is the great
strength of the whole Linux market; we have what
corresponds quite closely to the economist's
"perfectly competitive market". But not quite:
getting the word out is difficult in the
general hubbub. Beyond which, the "bleeding
edge" you have described is often provided by
major distros themselves: Red Hat has Rawhide,
Debian has the "unstable" branch, and so on.

Secondly, the effort to package and ship
distros is not insubstantial. I think it
better for the KDE project to focus on what
it is best at: KDE. Leave disto-building
to Debian, Red Hat and their ilk.

However, as for a *shrinkwrap* KOffice ... well,
that's the area I'm currently sniffing out
myself as a business idea.
