probably right. but that is more, rather than less, of a reason to
listen to him, because applications are written, presumably,
primarily for users rather than coders.
comparing, for instance, kword and abiword, one sees very different
approaches to the design and development of an application. it is
manifestly evident that kword will be a far more industrial-strength
application. and it is equally evident that if one needs to use one
right now, there are circumstances which cause one to go with abiword
instead. i know, because i've been using both. the determining factor
here, now, is that at 1280x1024, kword simply cannot be used and
abiword can. both are relatively stable. neither has the screen font
handling that the late, lamented maxwell had. i haven't looked at
siag for quite awhile -- i've imposed a proprietary format limit on
my machine.<g>
so probably a greater criticism of reviews/comparisons of open source
office suites for linux and related operating systems is that none of
them is really where it will ultimately be, and reviewing half-done
software doesn't tell anyone anything of much use.
