I think such a window would be an excellent idea - such feedback is 
important, especially on slower computers opening large files.  Would it be 
possible to only trigger the dialouge only after a relatively short amount 
of time has passed, rather than immediately, so if a computer gets done with 
the job quickly the window isn't triggered?  That way those of us with fast 
computers don't have a lot of annoying windows that we don't need and those 
of us with slower computers have some feedback when something shapes up to 
take a while.

Slightly off topic, but would something similar be of use elsewhere, such as 
when inserting images into a document - say, if projected time is longer 
than a couple of seconds, give a progress bar reporting on inserting of the 
image?  Normally it would not be of much use, granted, but again on slower 
computers there could be issues and such info bars help people to know that 
the computer is not crashed, just slow.
