I think such a window would be an excellent idea - such feedback is
important, especially on slower computers opening large files. Would it be
possible to only trigger the dialouge only after a relatively short amount
of time has passed, rather than immediately, so if a computer gets done with
the job quickly the window isn't triggered? That way those of us with fast
computers don't have a lot of annoying windows that we don't need and those
of us with slower computers have some feedback when something shapes up to
take a while.
Slightly off topic, but would something similar be of use elsewhere, such as
when inserting images into a document - say, if projected time is longer
than a couple of seconds, give a progress bar reporting on inserting of the
image? Normally it would not be of much use, granted, but again on slower
computers there could be issues and such info bars help people to know that
the computer is not crashed, just slow.
