An update to what I just wrote, sorry:
I just found the GNU Scientific Library ( http://sourceware.cygnus.com/gsl/ ).
Its also mentioned on the goose homepage. This is probably a better way to go
than taking some code out of Octave. Unfortunately, there is no stable release
yet.
