./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-install-doc --enable-shared
builds the shared library.

A ruby -r rbconfig -e 'printf("%s\n",Config::CONFIG["ENABLE_SHARED"])'
should return a 'no' on your current system. If Ruby got build with 
--enable-shared 'yes' is returned. That's checked at compiletime now and 
should be fixed
