KOffice-1.4 uses a completely different approach to spell-checking, based
on kdelibs' kspell2 library. Which version of kdelibs do you have?
(Qt >= 3.3 and kdelibs >= 3.3 is required, but koffice shouldn't even compile
with an older kdelibs, so I don't think this is the problem...)

Do you have libaspell? (well if not, and if you install it now, you'll have to recompile kdelibs...)

Double check that you have ispell and/or aspell dictionaries installed, too.

You don't have kdelibs compiled from sources, right? Using the
test programs in kdelibs/kspell2 would be a way to find out if the problem
is in the kspell2 side or the koffice side...
