Try starting them from the command line.  Sometimes you get more info there.  
If not try running them in gdb ...

gdb /usr/bin/kword

and then type run at the (gdb) prompt.

Also, you should try http://apt.unl.edu and upgrade to the latest kde from 
Redhat 9.  It makes things really nice.  And apt-get makes updates and 
upgrades easier.
