Splendid! Worked like a charm Clarence.

Well I have made similar blunders, if it is any consolation. Now I can
import the Gutenberg books into Kword and put the footnotes in proper
order.

Yes, but by using your advice it loaded Volume 1 of Decline and Fall of
The Roman Empire pretty quickly. I then saved that as a Kword doc (with
the new full page format) and reopened it. Memory consumption was
negligible! It did not use swap for a 361 page Kword doc with Footers
and Headers. When I loaded the original text file using "As is: At the
end of the line", the memory consumption was enormous. It used ~500
Mb. So the page formating makes a big difference in the memory
consumed?
I then copied and pasted the 361 pages to make a 722 page Kword
document. It still did not use much swap space. Here is the output from
top:
PID USER PRI NI SIZE RSS SHARE STAT %CPU %MEM TIME COM
2025 kword 25 0 116M 115M 7540 R 90.0 46.0 5:36 kdeinit
1916 root 15 0 76404 6040 832 R 2.6 2.3 0:32 X
2028 planck 15 0 85520 11M 9364 R 1.9 4.6 0:00 kdeinit
2036 planck 15 0 984 984 764 R 0.6 0.3 0:00 top

Note that RSS is 115 M for the account that is running Kword from CVS
head (that account is named Kword also).

You should also know that I run two X sessions at once. KDE 3.0.5 on
dipslay :0 and KDE_3_1_BRANCH on display :2.

Just out of curiosity, I copied and pasted the 722 page doc to double
it to 1444 pages (1,074,992 words and 6,436,792 characters including
spaces)

At the end of the load I had this from top:

Mem: 255964K av, 251428K used, 4536K free, 0K shrd, 6528K buff
Swap: 522100K av, 263428K used, 258672K free 24316K cached
PID USER PRI NI SIZE RSS SHARE STAT %CPU %MEM TIME
2025 kword 25 0 224M 155M 87620 R 94.3 62.0 39:34 kdeinit

It took about half an hour to paste the 722 additional pages, to make
the 1444 page *kwd. The first doubling was pretty quick about a few
minutes. The saved 1444 page *kwd was 2.6 Mb.
