Hmm. Shouldn't happen.
Maybe your DPI settings are wrong? (just a guess. Use "xdpyinfo |grep esolution" to see them).

KWord-1.1.1 wasn't WYSIWYG (but the font size should still be correct).
KWord-1.2-beta2 aims at being WYSIWYG.
You could try updating, the font stuff has radically changed.
