I think Thomas Zander started to look into a related problem a while back 
(sideheaders and side-by-side paragraphs) which could help solving the 
margin notes thing in one go -- some day. See

I always thought Mandrake should buy a Ventura package for every KWord 
developer around, just in case they run short of ideas for useful features 
one could implement in such a program. ;-))
