I don't know if this is any help, but I *didn't* experience the problem under 
Debian 2.2, but am under SuSE 7.3. The software versions are as follows

Debian 2.2:

GhostScript 5.0 or 5.5 (I think)
Cups 1.1.x something (very old)
XFree86 4.1.0
KDE 2.2
KOffice 1.1

SuSE 7.3:
GhostScript 6.51
Cups 1.1.10
XFree86
KDE 2.2.1
KOffice 1.1
