Funny how you like KOffice as it uses the same technology you bash in
your story on MS-Office. The technology is called SDI and is a lot more user
friendly then MDI (which is old school by now). 
As long as it is implemented properly that is, I have no idea how Windows
does this. KDE for example shows the file which is opened in the taskbar. 
It can even group all KWord instances in a single button on the taskbar if 
you like (most of my friend use that ;)
