Ok, but then it is clearly a bug in the server, not in KMail.
I can't find written in RFC 2060, that the mail client has to open the mail 
folder with SELECT, just to trigger such an internal copy operation. That is 
internal to the server and shouldn't be visible for the client. Checking for 
new mails can also be done with the EXAMINE or the STATUS command.
