You should better use the cancel button in the status bar for terminating the 
connection, rather than shutting down KMail.

Anyway AFAIK recently a problem was fixed, which caused some trouble if pop3 
was still running, when KMail was shut down. But I don't know, if that was 
related.

I'll close the issue then for now.

OS/Compiler notes: 

When kmail fails to connect to the POP3
server, it anounces it and quits without
saving the half written message in the draft
folder. The mail editor is killed in the
process so the message being worked on
gets lost.
