You should better use the cancel button in the status bar for terminating the connection, rather than shutting down KMail. Anyway AFAIK recently a problem was fixed, which caused some trouble if pop3 was still running, when KMail was shut down. But I don't know, if that was related. I'll close the issue then for now. The mail editor is killed in the process so the message being worked on gets lost.
