Is it faster with GnuPG 1.0.4? Also having much keys in your keyring 
can slow down GnuPG very much.

Making the automatic signature verification configurable is on my todo 
list. Non-blocking signature verification would also be nice.

Yeah, caching would be nice. Maybe we could save the state of the 
signature verification to the index files. Caching of decrypted 
messages is IMHO a bad idea because of security reasons and because of 
memory consumption.
