I think this is a known problem in WinGate, at least we recived a similar 
report some time ago.
Basically KMail tries to check for APOP and SASL support before sending the 
password in plain text over the network and WinGate terminates the connection 
then instead of simply reporting that it does not support these. A workaround 
is already in CVS or upgrading to a newer WinGate version could also help.

I just upgraded to Mandrake 8.0 (Kmail 1.2) from Mandrake 7.2. KMail can no longer \
connect to my mail server, which has not changed. My mail server is WinGate running \
on a Windows machine. The previous version of Kmail had no problems withn this mail \
server. Netscape Messenger and Mozilla Messenger can still connect and retrieve mail \
