Could you please try to find out with a network traffic monitor like 
ethereal what happens?

And could you also please provide us with the exact error message. 
Matthias only said the error message would be
	"The pop server returned ..." (cannot remember exactly)
This doesn't help. It would be nice to know what the server returned.
