Works fine here. (KMail 1.2 from KDE 2.1, Feb.10th CVS)
And was working for me for ages...

It's about 2 hours to build QT 2.2.4, kdesupport, kdelibs, kdebase on my 
Pentium III-600 (128MB)
It's really not so difficult.

BTW: may be, instead of "going back to mutt", you can try another 
distribution?
For several Linux distributions, you can have KDE updates (in form of Beta1, 
Beta2, etc...) once per month.
So, you will be running fresh code with minimal upgrade efforts.
