Compiler: gcc version egcs-2.91.66 19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2 release)
OS: Linux 2.2.12-20 i686 (compiled sources)

Nothing happens when clicking on "check mail" or running "kmail --check" 
from command line.
My mailbox is "local" and NFS mounted from a Sun Sparc Solaris.
My kmail is compiled from KDE 2.0 sources.

THIS USED TO WORK UNTILL KDE beta5 and no longer works since KDE2 RC2 till now
(KDE 2.0 vanilla)
I also tried recent kdenetwork from CVS with no luck (snapshot October 28)

Additional messages from command line (maybe unrelated)
kmail: Cannot lock folder `/var/spool/mail/jlf': No locks available (37)     
kmail: mailFolder could not be locked   
kmail: checked mail, server ready
