negative. the problem occurs with *any* message, and the symptom is 
immediate disappearance of kmail without it triggering the crash 
handler (which i've come to view as a kind of konqueror shutdown 
confirmation dialog). the only kmail "freeze" i've encountered has 
been, as you've correctly diagnosed, with heavily html formatted 
stuff.

with both the anti-pgp and anti-html hacks applied, kmail again 
behaves perfectly. (though, oddly, it seems to have unsubscribed me 
from a couple of mailing lists, which is really weird and probably 
simply a coincidence.)
