yup. i've now replaced *everything.* brand new linux distribution,
caldera  2.4, full install, XFree-3.3.5, kde2 built from prostine cvsup
harvest. still kmail crashes; in this case, it also locked up tight
rather than up and disappearing. entire source tree, even kdepim, built
with nary a hiccup. when run without gdb, the thing crashes with  a
broken pipe error.

anyway, here it is.
