Maybe depends on the Qt version? Is this possible?
I mean Qt's behaviour with strings has changed lately, so it could have 
changed around some earlier 1.x version. (Note: this is a wild guess ;-)

Yes.

We could do some smart detection algorithm that automagically selects
the proper default encoding.

I am thinking of counting the non-printable characters. 
If they are none: use 7 bit
If they are ~ 10%: use quoted-printable
otherwise use base64
