Tab to the folder tree, press ctrl up/down(/plus/minus/end/home/next/prev) 
this will change the current item but not change the selected item. (Makes 
sense?) When you reach the right folder press space to select it, then and 
only then will KMail update the list of headers/reader window to show 
messages in the selected folder.

This allows you to change from one selected folder to another folder without 
having to select all the folders in between.
