On Kmail 1.9.6, KDE 3.5.7: 
Best way to add a HTML signature is to create a HTML file (say with NVU), then go to the \
template folder (should be under drafts folder) and create a template and attach that HTML \
file.  Next, while still in the Message, open the properties of the HTML file and choose \
"Suggest Automatic Display" and make sure the type (at the top of the panel) is text/html.  Now \
save it back into the templates folder and you will see it does what you want.  Use the \
template every time you need a new email - you can send it straight from the template folder \
without having to re-create the original.  So now you have the ability to write a non-html \
e-mail (and please the purists) but send it with a HTML attachment (and then infuriate them).  \
