I can reproduce this on Debian with these packages:
~$ dpkg-query -W kmail kdepim kdelibs
kmail   4:3.5.6.dfsg.1-1
kdepim  4:3.5.6.dfsg.1-1
kdelibs 4:3.5.6.r1.dfsg.1-2

My address book is located on an NFS share. It is exactly as described above, KMail \
apparently writes back the address book every time it exits.

I cannot reproduce it with the default address book file.
