Silly me. I've realised this isn't a bug at all: when viewing a webpage in Konqueror, pressing \
control has the same effect: a tooltip bearing a single letter appears over every hyperlink. \
Pressing the associated key activates the corresponding link. What a useful feature - once you \
know how it works! Konqueror helpfully says 'Access Keys activated' in the status bar when you \
press control. Perhaps some sort of thing would be appropriate in KMail? It's taken me this \
long to realise how it works - I'm sure there are others in the same situation. I suppose then \
that this is a feature request: some kind of indication of what is happening when you press \
