Silly me. I've realised this isn't a bug at all: when viewing a webpage in Konqueror, \
pressing control has the same effect: a tooltip bearing a single letter appears over \
every hyperlink. Pressing the associated key activates the corresponding link. What a \
useful feature - once you know how it works! Konqueror helpfully says 'Access Keys \
activated' in the status bar when you press control. Perhaps some sort of thing would \
be appropriate in KMail? It's taken me this long to realise how it works - I'm sure \
there are others in the same situation. I suppose then that this is a feature \
request: some kind of indication of what is happening when you press control. \
