I use the same principle. My mail is set in .maildir with procmail. Then I 
have setup an imap-server on localhost which looks in .maildir for mails, and 
with kmail, I use my local imap server. Beware that folders have to be hidden 
in your maildir (so starting with "."). Works perfect I must say :). And I 
can access my emails on other computers by accessing the imap server with 
other mail clients, or using squirrelmail.
