That argument does not hold since the folder structure of KMail is already
very different from what mutt/pine expect.  In its current version sharing
is not practical anyway.

The incompatability I am referring to is concerning the subdir structure
KMail enforces.  Creating ".foo.directory" directories.
Furthermore, altering mailbox 'foobar' with mutt and leaving the
foobar.ids and foobar.sorted files untouched can lead to loss of email.

Now you point it out, these basic differences makes renaming it (out of
$HOME, as Aaron proposed) a very good idea to avoid trouble.
